Re: glassing my wood strip wannigan

Alick, are you planning anything to keep it up out of the bilge water? I had thought of adding four(ish) lengthwise strips that I would like add some kind of padding to, to protect the inside of the hull from abrasion.

Re: glassing my wood strip wannigan

Great idea Alick, I have been planning on doing the same thing. I have had lots of ideas floating around in my head about how I will do it, but have not set on anything yet, so really looking forward to how this works out for you. I sure hope my old wannigan is not put off by being replaced. I have ...

Re: Left overs ?

Lots of great uses of materials, guys. Randy, nothing shows care of detail more than fancy workshop stuff, the plug plates are great.

Re: Station Positioning

You got it. That way the strips touch right at the 1' station increments, exactly where they need to be.

Re: Fairing a hull

Bob, I would first knock down all the high ridges with a sharp block plane, then some quick passes with 80 grit on a fairing board to roughly fair out your hull. You might be surprised that many of these spots you are worried about may have already faired out and disappeared. And if not, use a flexi...

Re: Strips are pulling away from the forms

I used a spokeshave for the most part with no problem, you just have to cut in the right direction. I did use a rasp in a couple places. I do really like the look of this Michne Stick, it does look like a great solution.

Re: Strips are pulling away from the forms

I used straps, one on each form, and it worked out fine. I would install usually 3 strips, tighten the straps, then use wedges to push the strips together. After 30 minutes or so, the glue would be set up, and I could repeat on the other side. In this photo, the scrap strips were put in after tighte...

Re: Tools

That looks like a great guide. The added length would definitely help maintain a straight smooth cut. I have used my track saw, but for longer lengths the track has to be moved as it is only about 9' long. It did work great for cutting a straight line along the bottom of the hull. 5 minutes to caref...
