Re: Stem form and cheek form measurement question

Re: Stem form and cheek form measurement question
no worries
another good source of info for making bob's is ted's article in "build a boat". the pdf of "build a boat" is available from wooden boat magazine's web site for a few $.

Re: Stem form and cheek form measurement question
hi morecowbell :) the simple answer is ... doesn't realy matter, because station 7 on the bob's isn't needed :wink if you look at the plans (assuming you are making it from plans and not offset table) it says "station 7 not required". :tu my bob's certainly hasn't suffered from excluding it.

Re: low angle double paddle build
I didn't notice if you had posted this or not, but how did you round the shaft? 80 grit sandpaper on a sanding block. :wink normally when you do a solid shaft you'd use a spokeshave or plane to turn a square or rectangular shaft into an octagonal, then shave down the edges again to give you 16 side...

ok, so it's done! :dancing http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/colective/Canoe%20Build/Paddle%20Build/Double_paddle_finished_zpsfedde3d1.jpg cruiser suggested longer was better, so.... length from tip to tip: 2910ish mm weight: 980g. i tried to glass the edge of the blades, but this didn't work, so...

Re: Cracked hull help!
hi alick :) i was thinking the same solution as jim to hold the lifted piece down. as cruiser said, there may be some tension. you may have to think about maybe removing the thwarts and seat frames if possible to give you a little flexibility. if you can expand the hull a hair it may make popping th...

Re: double paddle for solo canoe?
thanx cruiser, guess i'll give rings a try. i'll have to custom make something because my shaft is thicker than the commercially made paddles. i did come across something posted elsewhere using funnels with the end cut off. whatever i use will have to be spit since it's a one piece. some sanding and...

to drip ring, or not to drip ring, that is the question?
cruiser: did you try with and without drip rings?

Re: low angle double paddle build
welp, the forum has been a little quiet, so i thought i'd post a bit more of the build. the weather hasn't been great, so i've only managed to get a single coat of epoxy on the glass for the blades, so no pics of that yet, but here's what else i have. :wink shaft: i cut a slot in the shaft 100mm lon...

Re: low angle double paddle build
shaft: here's the shaft after glassing and trimming to size (2100mm). http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/colective/Canoe%20Build/Paddle%20Build/double_paddle_shaft_trimmed_zps5dccad19.jpg now, you could probably leave it octagonal, sand it smooth and round the edges for the purposes of glassing, b...

low angle double paddle build
hi all :) well, i've started the build, so here's what i have so far: for the shaft i've used birds mouth construction. the strips are 13mm wide and 6mm thick. i used a 90deg v bit on the router table to get my groove. i alternated between paulownia strips and wrc. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y...

Re: double paddle for solo canoe?
cruiser: ferrule? what's that? hehe i hadn't really considered using a ferrule, i was planing on making it a one piece and lashing it to the underside of the seat frames for transport. not sure how the carbon fibre would look with the timber. i'd probably paint the ferrule i think.

Re: double paddle for solo canoe?
thanx cruiser :) i looked at grey owl paddles web site and i could only see one paddle they referred to as low angle (tempest). the max length for that was 2.5m total length with a 1.5ish shaft. i glued up my shaft and after trimming the ends (the strips were all different lengths) i have 2.46m to p...

double paddle for solo canoe?
hi all :) thought i'd give using a double paddle a go for solo paddling splinters. going with a birds mouth shaft of wrc and paulownia, with wrc blades, all glassed. i've gotten the materials together and dimensioned ready for gluing, but before i get too much further, i need to lock down the shaft ...

Re: First Time Build
if you have the tools and the skills then i think it comes down to how much time you have and how easily you can get good timber. you possibly don't have the same issues of location. i'm not a woodworker, so i managed to find a place where i could buy strips, but then it took ages to actually get th...
