Redbird questions

I want to attach a brass stemband to the outer stems only (I won't have a keel). Ted calls for a 3/8 in. by 3/16 in. stem band. I have not been able to find one (at least not from a company that will sell to an individual in a small quantity) except for Jamestown Distributors. However, their brass s...

Attaching the outer stems.

I am about to glue the outer stems onto the inner stems and planking. I have seen pictures on the forum of straps holding the stem on while the epoxy sets. I can't tell from the pictures if screws were used as stated in Ted's book. Does anyone have experience with not using screws as Ted suggests? I...

Redbird Outer Stems

I'm at the point on my Redbird of attaching the outer stems. Could someone provide a little more clarification on exactly how the end of the outer stem interfaces with the strips at the bottom of the boat? I am not using a keel. Pictures would be great.

Thanks.

Re: Strips are pulling away from the forms

All: Thanks for your replies. I am a the point where I am installing one strip at a time because the twist at the stem is easier to clamp onto the inner stem when there is only one strip. I found it difficult to twist and hold down three strips. Nevertheless, I have set up the straps as you have sho...

Strips are pulling away from the forms

I'm laying my 18th strip on my Redbird ( I'm about 2/3 rd's of the way through the sharp radius at the bottom of the hull) and I'm noticing that the glued hull already installed is pulling away from the forms. I'm using the stapleless method, so when I install the wedge to hold the new strip against...

Re: Redbird strip at inner stem

Randy: Thank you for your reply. I was preparing to wet the strips with warm water and then preparing a levered clamp just as you suggested. Great minds think alike! :laughing But, if the glue will hold, I may not go through the trouble. However, you have confirmed that I am on the right track. Than...

Redbird strip at inner stem

I am laying the 14th,15th, and 16th strips on my Redbird and they seem to need twisted an excessive amount to match the surface of the inner stem. I can dry fit them, but I'm concerned the glue won't hold. Any comments? Thanks.
