Brian: Thank you for your reply.
Your answer is what I was expecting. I will thin with an amount of mineral spirits that I find workable. I would imagine that since I am applying less varnish every coat, I can make up for it by applying more coats.
Thanks again.

Varnishing
I am varnishing my seats made out of walnut and I followed the Epifanes directions on thinning with mineral spirits: First coat: 50% (That really worked great. The reduced varnish really soaked into the wood.) Second coat: 25% Third coat: 15% Next four coats: 0-5%. I'm finding that the 0-5% reductio...

4th epoxy coat
I have applied 3 coats of epoxy resin with 6 lb. cloth to the outside of my Redbird and there are several spots where I can see the cloth pattern. They are bout the size of a quarter and the surface is smooth. I suspect I was either too aggressive with the squeegee removing excess epoxy during appli...

I would be interested in knowing the weight of the seats Ted has in "Canoecraft".

Re: cane seats 2
Clay: Thanks for the comments. I don't have anything but a bathroom scale. By standing on the scale with and without the finished seat, one weighs 2.5 lbs. Brian: Thank you for your comments. I did countersink each hole 1/16 in. on both sides. On the 3rd page of pictures on photobucket, I think it's...

cane seats 2
Let's try this link to Photobucket. Cruiser, thanks for the suggestion. I have finished one Green Valley Boat Works cane seat and if anyone is interested, here's the Photobucket link to some pictures (probably too many). I have not yet varnished this seat. On the second one, I will varnish the walnu...

cane seats
I have finished one Green Valley Boat Works cane seat and if anyone is interested, here's the drop box link to some pictures(probably too many). I have not yet varnished this seat. On the next one, I will varnish the walnut frame prior to caning. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/k2umdzc5wg9xo55/AACnWPeCrl...

Jim: Will post pic's as I go. I always appreciate comments and suggestions from forum members. Thanks. Randy: Good point on natural cane's longevity and durability. As a matter of fact, I have an Old Towne with cane seats and it's about 30+ years old. It uses the groove/spline method and does need s...

Re: Cane type
Jim & Brian: Thanks for your thoughts. I think I am committed to cane as it gives that traditional look. I am making the seat designed by Green Valley Boat Works pictured below. Jim- it does call for morticed joints. The picture you show confirms that you can't tell the difference, so I think I ...

Cane type
I was speaking to a cane seat designer, and he suggested plastic canever natural as being more durable and maintenance free. He stated that it's difficult to tell the difference.
I would appreciate views on this issue. I don't want to offend the wooden canoe gods, buy I like low maintenance.

Re: Epifanes
Brian: Those are excellent videos. Thanks. I think these have convinced me to use the rolling/tipping method rather than spray. Spraying wastes a lot of material, and the overspray is a mess or requires a lot of work to protect surrounding equipment/areas. The rolling/tipping technique appears to gi...

Epifanes
I am closing in on the final step- varnishing. Ted suggests 2 quarts of spar varnish. I will be using Epifanes. I don't know yet if I will spray or brush. I do plan on as many coats as I can tolerate. At least 6, maybe more, like up to 10-11. My question is, how much for each method for let's say 6-...
