Forming the bow and stern

I have an inside stem in the bow of this model I'm working on and I am wondering what is the best way to get this formed down to the stem? What tools to you use? I have no power so I can sand it down to the stem to a flat 3/8" so then I can attach the brass stem to it. Would a surform speed thi...

Now those are great ideas! Thanks a million guys. I have no power over on the property where I am building this so the router idea is out. But that dosen't mean I can't use a good sharp chisel and knife to cut a an even rectangle and glue in a piece. Agian, Great ideas guys, Thanks. I'll keep ya's p...

Filling a flaw in one of the strips

Hi, I found a flaw in thickness in one of the strips at the face of the bow. It's a strip of about 3" long. I will fill this with wood filler but I know it will show through like wet t-shirt contest when I do the glassing. Is this one of those areas that I might wanna reveal my atristic abiliti...

Sounds real good. B.C. is an expensive place to live. Does the demographics indicate that there is a good market for this type of business? How large of a community of boatbuilders, craftsmen, sales persons, suppliers and support people are you looking for? Has the business plan been done for this t...

I'll be sealing the canoe before glassing. I think I''ll do it in 2 steps also. I may be by myself for the football layer so I'll keep things easy and straight forward for myself. Yes, I want the extra protection. Now if I can only get the sanding and filling done. This guy who stripped this must ha...

Thanks Rick, I thought it may be tricky to do this with things sliding around. I also thought that adding the football after glassing the first layer may cause air to get trapped between the layers since the first layer hasn't got 3 coats of epoxy on it. Maybe I'm confusing myself beyond common sens...

Hi Glen, Thanks for your reply but I already have the Canoecraft book. It does have a different procedure and that's why I was asking which one was used with success.
I should mention I don't have the revised edition 2000' of Canoecraft..
Cheers, Robbie.

A couple of questions

Hi, I'm a little ahead of myself here but now I'm a little confused. I have a number of references and Gil Gilpatrick's book says that when laying out your fiberglas your first layer is football shaped(waterline size) and then the full 60" sheet over this. Do any of you use this method or do yo...

Thanks guys. The canoe is stripped only. I have to do the rest. I too think it's a good idea for a keel on this model. I'm only going to use an electric trolling motor on it but a keel is probably neccessary. Maybe on the next canoe I make I'll make the stems at the same time. The originator didn't ...

Thanks for your help Randy. More filling and sanding for me then! Would you recommend an outside stem on the bow for this square back stern version? Is that a bad idea at this point of construction? How about a keel? From what I've read, this is not a good idea for any canoe. Did you use the west sy...

The Next Step

I have a number of books for reference but they are a little confusing on the necxt step here. I got the canoe home and started sanding, pulling nails and staples ect. I had to re-glue some areas that the stripping lifted during the move. One book tells me to fill the holes and everything with water...

Thanks for the info guys. I'll let you know how things turn out after the move. I think I'll strap it at some of the stations for some stability.
Cheers, Robbie.

Hi , I'm justn wondering if you could clamp on a block of wood to the inwale side and when you drill through it may not "break out" or splinter.?
Cheers, Robbie.
