Re: Replace damaged strips, centerline cut
I would like to know how you removed the damaged strips so neatly. How did you get the inside epoxy/fiberglass to release the damaged strip(s) ??????????

Re: Sheathing Repair less than desirable
Thank you for your thoughts on my repair job. Your interpretation confirms my thoughts. I also use my canoe and I do not expect her to stay "flawless". The deep raw gouge bothered me and I do feel better having the wound dressed (even if it still shows).

Sheathing Repair less than desirable
I have been doing some maintenance on my Ranger. Last year's paddling left some nasty scratches in the hull. I followed Ted's book on doing the repair to the sheathing (Page 183, a gouge into the resin, down to the glass, but not into the wood). I sanded and feathered as the book says and used a pie...

Randy
Nice looking paddles.
I have a question on the two blades in the center of your six-paddle picture. How did you get your cedar to make that bend ?

Re: Lapstrake Canoes: Reference books and getting started
Sedges Thank for the reply. I made a move toward the canoe that I will build. Today I called Walt Simmons at Duck Trap and talked to him about a 13' lapstrake canoe. I ended up buying the plans, his book, and an accompanying CD for building the 13 footer. So now I have a lot to think about. Traditio...

Lapstrake Canoes: Reference books and getting started
Hello I need a project canoe in the shop. I would like some advice and direction on getting started on a lapstrake canoe. I have built two cedar strips and do not have the desire to do a 3rd by cedar strip. Lapstrake boat hulls have always charmed me and I think a small canoe (like a wee lassie desi...

Re: 15' 0" Prospector Ranger
I completed the finish work on the inside of my Ranger today. She weighs in at 54 pounds....... a little heavier than I wanted, but I'll keep her. I sanded the exterior epoxy work before I took her off the molds. So, just a bit of touch up and I will be ready to varnish the exterior (and have her ga...

Re: variation in strip thickness
You will have a headache trying to bead and cove strips that are of different thickness (voice of experience)........ and if you manage to bead and cove, you will end up with another headache trying to plank up the hull with different thickness strips. I would (and have done just that) run the batch...

Re: Mounting yoke under gunnels
Picture shows what I did to my center thwart/yoke to meet the gunwale. The bevel on the thwart was not that difficult to do and I am satisfied I also beveled my seat hangers to be plumb and square with the frame of the seat. The picture does not show the angle on the hanger but you can see that the ...

Re: Ventilating a small shop in winter: Any Tricks?
Rod, I never gave the VOC's a thought. I have used Pettit in the past. I liked the way it went down and stuck with what I was familiar with....... but in other years I did my varnish work with windows open. Too late now to change. Pettit Z-Spar Flagship 2015 ( VOC of 410 g/l) by comparison Epifanes ...

Re: Ventilating a small shop in winter: Any Tricks?
Thanks Rod My shop is attached to the house as an extension to the garage. I heat the space with "cove heaters" (radiant heat). I am working on a low tech (and cheap) solution to move just a bit of air through the shop. I am planning on mounting a cheap (70 cfm) bathroom fan to a piece of ...

Ventilating a small shop in winter: Any Tricks?
Varnish work stands before me as well as winter. My shop is small (roughly 15’ wide, 20’long and with 8’ ceilings). Varnish work in a “well ventilated” space is hard to do when the beast of winter lies in wait outside my door. Yesterday I put the first coat of varnish on the inside hull and trim of ...

So, this is the hull of hard knocks and she looks none the worse for her ride on the wind. I tried to find the cracks. I could not......... Congratulations. She looks great

Re: Think I built my last canoe
I am sorry to hear this. Your story is hitting close to home (but not to the extent of your injuries). I have had to deal with shoulder problems for years and at 64 I am finally figuring out that I better change the ways I do things. I am sure you will figure out how to get that Ranger on the water....

Re: 15' 0" Prospector Ranger
It has been a while since I posted an update of progress on my Ranger. So, as of today: ** Gunwales are on (glued and screwed) ** Gunwale screw holes will be plugged ** Black walnut used on seats and trim work ** The picture shows a light colored wood for my seat hangers. That wood is scrap plywood ...
