This is one area that I did a lot of searching on since this was the one area that I was worried the most about. Working with wood was something that I was confortable with but epoxy and glass cloth was something quite new to me. What I found was that there is three different types of posts on any g...

One of the frustrations I had when working with the cloth was working around the edges of the cloth. No matter how I tried, there was always some loose strands that I could not get to lay flat. These were on the bias strips that I used over the stems and especially inside. My guess is that the side ...

Both sets of webpages are active so it looks like the owner may have created both. I'd expect that sooner or later one will be deleted but who knows when that would be and which one.

We used Mortice and tenon joints. The front and back are made from laminated strips that we steam bent down for comfort.

I followed the instructions I found at: http://krypton.mnsu.edu/~wayne/Caning/ChairCaning.htm The pictures helped a lot. I just finished the second seat this past weekend. Make sure to read whatever instructions you follow carefully. I had to start over when I did not leave enough slack at first. Wh...

We encountered pretty much the same thing with one of the strips on our build and compounded the problem by our first method. We ended up ripping that strip out and going to the strip below before we fixed it. What eventually worked for us was to split the offending strip down the centre by first ma...

I agree with Tim's assessment. This is one awesome looking craft.

To paraphrase someone else on this forum, what scenery are you missing while you are staring down at your boat instead?

I did a quick check on Google and found this

Based on wood densities you're going to be adding about 40% to the weight.

I used a Mastercraft heat gun from Canadian Tire that I managed to get on sale. As far as using it goes it was pretty much routine. I moved the gun over a 3 foot length or so in the area that would be twisted from one end of this section to the other without dwelling over any spot. You want to get t...

Your own argument can be used against you in this. Your I beam example is based on two webs and a rib that wre all formed essentially from a liquid state and there is no tension between these three parts. If the I beam was formed from three distinct parts where the rib was curved or bent and had to ...

I would steer clear of this myself. Even with "relatively flat" and "a small degree of tumblehome" you would be bending the plywood in two dimensions. 8mm plywood is going to be pretty stiff and I can see a lot of stress at the ends where it is going to want to flatten out. Even ...

We used Basswood in the accent strips and this worked out well. I've seen other boats where most of it was Basswood as well as others using Aspen. I have even seen Ipe which is also called Brazillian Walnut (I could be mistaken here) and is very hard. As previously mentioned, the trick will be in sa...

Since you mentioned cedar for the stem strips I am assuming that you are talking about the inner stem. I would think that cedar is too soft for outer stems. The stems are enclosed within epoxy so you can use carpenters glue. I used goriila glue on the outer stems since I used black walnut for the st...

The way that we set up the router would produce smooth edges either way but now that I think about it beading the rough edge first would produce less waste overall.
