Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Here's a picture of the clamp damage at the station molds. Only happens where I'm clamping over 1/2" thickness. Just the strip to strip clamping is fine. Didn't have time today, but tomorrow I'll try a damp rag and hot iron and see if that will take care of them. Soft stuff. I may switch to L ...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

I was able to go out and play with strips again today. Starting to look like a little progress is being made. I’ve gotten to a couple of the sharper curves and it’s looking like I should have gone to ½” strips for that. Having a tough time keeping them attached to the molds and still be able to clo...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Went out this morning and put on another couple strips. Once I had those all clamped down I decided to remove the bottom Poplar support strip. The lower strips came away from the forms a little, so re-clamped them in place. I’ll wait until around 4 oclock and put on another two strips. Already prep...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

I love working with it. And it makes for very clean looking projects. I've got one last place here in town that may carry it. Wholesale only, but I can use the ranch account. Problem there being minimum orders. We shall see.. 1/2" for the boat and 3/4" for my tool jigs. I decided to make ...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Had some time between rain showers today to sneak out to the shed and add a couple more strips to the S.G. It was wet and cool and taking a long time for the glue to set, so that was all I got done. This storm breaks up tomorrow some time, so this weekend should be good for building. Also spending ...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Oh, I've got the disk type. I've been watching Woodsmith Shop online and many of their jigs use adhesive backed sandpaper to keep parts from slipping. They are using rolls of 3" or 4" wide stuff, cutting off what they need and peeling off the backing to attach to their fences. It's in rol...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Hi Randy Yep, I've seen many of these different methods used in the past. Years ago on the kayak forum and on this one. I made my strips 3/16" x 5/8" for this reason ( along with less weight ) and the Paulownia bends very easily. I don't think I'll need much force to keep them down. One t...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Glad you guys are still around on the forum... it would get pretty lonely..! And you've got plenty of good ideas. That black clamp reminded me I have a couple of old plastic 3" spring clamps that I very seldom use and they have a rubbery cap on the ends. Before putting sand paper on the caps I...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Went back out today to work in back yard, and between mowing and patching fence boards, I managed to get a couple more strips on. I tried to use just blue masking tape, and though it held the strips to the stems, it would not pull out the slight twist and kept pulling off the stem at the top of the...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

I know this is sorta ‘off-topic’ but, IF I say that I cut the log and 2”x’s for the Sairy Gamp, I may be able to squeeze by the rules this one time. I cut up an old log that had been sitting around and gotten some major cracks on the outside, down to near the center. It was in pretty bad shape most...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Left the fairing strips on, but, moved them down below the sheer-line and will use those to support the first strips. Once the first strips are attached on each side, I can remove the support strips. I’m thinking seriously of adding another strip to raise the sheer-line as it is a very shallow hull...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Oh, forgot to mention, my inner stems are Paulownia so they will sand equally easy, however, my chisel and spokeshave were not sharp enough and really gouged out the wood. Working on that..

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Awesome idea. I've done similar things when matching hull & deck on kayaks, using sand paper on a stick to reach both sides. Don't know why I didn't think of that. Years ago I would check out Johns site about once a week to get ideas for things. I do believe that his Wee Lassie II was the boat ...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Well, spent more time messin about with little stuff. Decided to take a few minutes and start grinding the angles on the stems, just roughing them out and I can finish them later when I start putting the strips on. Got out the usual tools for the job, but, that was way too slow. So…. http://img.pho...
