I'll second what Dave just said. Glue lines will show up more often than small gaps. Wetting the wood down will show any left over glue lines.

With your deck already installed you're probably going to need to screw the ends of your outwalls to the hull. Don't forget to wax the screws for removal after the epoxy cures then plug the holes. You could also counterbore the screws in those areas and plug the holes. A couple bar clamps with thick...

Dave,
I think most will agree that bronze wool would be a better choice than steel wool to use on a boat. Those tiny fragments will stick to the finish and rust.

Bill, This is why I eliminated the precoating. On three boats with a precoat there is slight blotchy areas. Two boats with no precoat no blotchy areas. It is difficult to sand the precoat evenly to avoid this problem IMO.

The best results for me was using a dado blade in a radial arm saw. That saw broke down last year so this year I did them on a table saw with a dado blade. Good results but not as easy.

Thanks for all the input guys. The Epifanes product that Glen refers to is a synthetic wood finish available in gloss and matte. From what I read in the West Marine Advisor these synthetics were developed for use over tropical hardwoods because of the oil content of the wood. The really great featur...

Doug and Bassbug thanks for the quick replies! My reasons for using gloss first: I have a full quart leftover from my last canoe and I've heard of this being done with poly on furniture finishes. Since my post I checked West Marine catalog and discovered that their varnish products, ZSPAR, INTERLUX,...

gloss vs. semi-gloss

Has anyone in the forum used semi-gloss varnish inside and outside? Were you happy with the results? Can I use gloss for the first two coats and semi for the last two? Really interested in your feedback. Thanks!

Does anyone have a source for bronze ring bolts? I'd like a 1 1/2 to 2 inch ring, 2 inch shank, 1/4 inch thick. I've checked many sources with no luck. Thanks for any help.

Jeff, I would suggest a Bob Special for the following reasons: 1. ease of construction 2. Your size and weight is going to max out most solo designs, the same problem I have. 3. Plenty of room for fishing gear, cooler, significant other The Rob Roy I'm building now would be perfect for a smaller per...

fitting inwalls

Following Canoecraft instructions for measuring and fitting inwalls has not worked well for me. The inwalls on my last canoe and rowboat have come up an 1/8 inch short. I tried something different this week on my Bob Special. I clamped my inwall material on the outside allowing excess to entend past...
