Well Patrick, eating them wasn't exactly what I had in mind, although the process of roasting them on a spit was a pleasant thought. Actually, I might have misled. The kids were my nephews, 8 and 10. I had to go away on business and forgot to lock the shop before I left. My own stupidity. While I wa...

Still at it and hit yet another bump!

Hi folks. Still working on the Nomad. You won't believe all that has happened since I started. A senseless act of vandalism destroyed the canoe with less than 10 strips to go to finish closing the hull. Had to start all over with scrap strips, poorly beaded and coved and all short pieces. These were...

Tha ks for the help and the link Greg. You did a great job and like you said, it's hard to pick up. I think that may be the sloution to the problem. I re-checked level this moning and found that from station zero to the stern everything is level across and level lengthwise. From station zero to the ...

Thanks Ron. I will probably switch to the centerlne method as you described. Both sides are even on both ends so I think that will work out OK. We'll see. Thanks again.

BIG oops!

I'm stripping my Nomad and am about to make the turn at the bilge..or rather I was. I noticed an inch and a half height difference in the bow and the stern at station number seven. That is to say that the strips at what I call the stern, are one and a half inches higher from the top of the strongbac...

rogue strip

All was well when I left it last night. That ended this morning. I went to the shop and noticed the white juniper accent stripe wasn't pulled tight enough against the strip under it when I clamped it down. As a result, in several places, it warped and left a large gap between it and the strip under ...

Stem Mold

I'm building the 17/ Nomad without inner and outer stems. I'm using Gilpatrick's method here. On the plans, the stem molds have a dark, heavy line representing the outline of the stem. Outside this dark line are two dotted lines, representing the space taken up by the inner and outer stems. The dark...

I noticed that Glen said the stem height was 25 inches on the Nomad. I just finished drawing mine out on the board and found that from the highest point of the stem mold to the base line is 22.5 inches. It's 17 inches from the top to the sheer line. Did I miss something? Also, if I add say, 1 inch t...

After a LONG Hiatus..I'm back...

Hello to all. After a long time away from canoe building and the computer, I'm finally back in my home state and ready to continue on trying to build a Nomad. Strips are all cut, planed, coved and beaded. Strongback is built and ready for the molds. I'm back just where I left off. I just spent a cou...

JimD...yep they were slash cut...just warped after being ripped for some reason. No big deal I guess. I can do as suggested and use the straight parts. Don't need too many of them as I was planning to use them as accent strips anyway. Rick and JColten. Thanks for the input. I had just figured those ...

Thanks Dell, I'll keep the Okeefenokee in mind. As for the warped strips, if one was laid on the canoe as you would when stripping, the last two to three feet on one end would point up at about a 60 to 70 degree angle. Not sure they'll bend that much to straighten them out. I think it would be hard ...

Getting there slowly but surely

I'm making progress on my canoe but having to go piecemeal til I get the other projects finished that will free up my building space. So far I've built and caned the seats, (Gilpatrick forgot to mention about the sore fingers in his book) carved the yoke, built the strong back and have ripped and pl...
