Ok Folks how about a sailing rig!

Post by Ed Houston »

:thinking Has anyone of you wonderful folks considered :rolling eyes built or know someone who has built a sailing rig for their prospector ranger :thinking ?

I have this mad :rolling eyes idea that I would like a sailing rig for mine, guess I am a little lazy in the paddling idea.

You've knocked at the right door, Ed. John Hupfield can fix you up with all you need: http://www.lostinthewoods.ca/

You might find some info or ideas at this link: http://www.paddlin.com/fivelakes/canoe_sailing.html

This one shows a "cheap" solution: http://www.friend.ly.net/~dadadata/canoes.html

Here is one more for you: http://www.sailboatstogo.com/catalog/pr ... =CANOE_RIG

I made a very simple rig for a 16 Prospector. The sail was only 32 square feet and a boomless standing lug design. Simple lee boards that tied to the center thwart and a rudder. I'll try to dig up a picture. Sail area does not have to be big if you are not into racing the thing.

I have built rigs

Post by hoz »

I started sailing a Souris River Quetico 16 (somewhat like a Prospector but with less rocker). Switched to a Mohawk Odyssey 14, then finally built a decked sailcanoe. All my rigs are homemade and under $150.00. You can spend as much or as little as you want.

Balogh rigs cost $1200.00, http://www.baloghsaildesigns.com/index.html

A homebuilt rig can be built as low as $50.00, http://www.mediterraneanavenue.com/Cano ... %20Rig.htm

It's big fun and beware, it's addicting.

The West System magazine "epoxyworks" had some articles on canoe sailing in a back issue: http://www.epoxyworks.com/16/index16.html

Yes , Todds book is the bible on rigging a sailing canoe. It's a beautiful large coffee table book with accurate color drawings of historically significant sailing rigs. Todd starts at the beginning and brings you upto the present.
