Prospector canoe

Post by jacob2476 »

Hello,
I'm building a Prospector canoe and am using the Bear Mountain plans. My question is in regards to shaping the stem. I have my 1/8th of an inch marks on the stem and have used a batten to follow the curve of the stations to see where the batten intersects with the stem. What I have found is that the batten intersects the stem mold rather than the stem itself. The result is that when the batten lays accross the stations and meets the 1/8 inch mark on the stem, there is a recurve in the batten. Is this the correct form for the Prospecter or is something wrong with my set up. I've checked each station and its location on my strongback and and everything seems fine. Any suggestions?

Jake,

Welcome. The Prospector is a fun build. I think you are asking if there is a concave area in the canoe from the stems back toward the broader section of the canoe. Yes there is. Some refer to this as "cheek" and the Prospector definately has some. Just be sure to keep your strilps tight to the stations as you go and it will look great!

Keep coming back!

Prospector shape near stems

Post by dstncebkr »

Yes the prospector does have the hollows (cheeks) between the stem and 5th? station (2nd station back from the stem). Maybe the pictures will give you an idea of how much hollow is in this area...
