Canoe building in Australia?

Post by Gene Burreson »

Does anyone on this forum have any experience with stripper canoe building in Australia? After a friend who lives there saw my redbird he wants me to help him build a canoe in Australia. However, we can't find any source of strips and I don't know what local wood might be appropriate for strips if we were to cut our own. I have been on Duck Flat Wooden Boats web site (they're near Adelaide), but they don't seem to sell strips or wood, although I haven't contacted them directly. Any information will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Gene

I have heard that a lot of builders use "Paulownia" in Australia. Maybe one of our "down under" members can provide more info. If you are in a rush for an answer you will also find several Australian boat builders through the Guillemot Boat Building Forum: http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi

Here is a site you might check for Australian plantation timber

I am not sure if you can use pine for strips but there is plantation radiata and hoop pine available in the Adelaide area

Stripper canoe building in Australia

Post by Pedro »

Hi Gene,
In Sydney I have found good straight WRC in 16 foot lengths 3/4 by 5 1/2. I haven't found pre milled strips, so I have cut, beaded & coved my own. I can't see why you couldn't use Radiata, I don't think you will get hoop pine in Adelade. I have heard Paulownia is usable.
I'm about to start stripping my first canoe with WRC so I don't really know much about usable OZ woods but I'm keen to find & try some on the next one. Good luck.
Pedro.

Hi Gene,
missed something in my last post. These people do sell milled strips. Just get in contact with them. They provide complete kits also.
