Baidarka

Post by Doug »

Greetings, I'm looking for websites on the Baidarka design.
Any recommendations?

Any plans on line?

Doug

Have you seen this?

Do you prefer strip, stitch & glue, SOF or a folder?

A couple of more suggestions...

http://www.laughingloon.com has 3 strip baidarka designs. I bought the manual and plans for the Shooting Star. You can follow the build of a shooting star here: http://dashpointpirate.typepad.com/the_ ... index.html

And of course it's a good idea to get George Dyson's book "Baidarka". He has some building information in his book although i'm not sure it's really all that useful. It's a good book though. Perhaps it even deserves the term "quintessential."

This probably the easiest way to compete a baidarka: http://www.yostwerks.com/NikumiPaddle6.html

cheers

If I were to build a baidarka, I'd build it skin-on-frame. Morris' book describes methods for several designs, including a baidarka.

the best book for this is "Baidarka: The Kayak" by George Dyson (indeed, the one who is selling skinning & lashing material for SOF's). Unfortunately, the book is out of print, try to get a 2nd hand one.

Yes! It is transparent. It's skinned with a clear vinyl. Not super durable, but it is super cool.

Nikumi

Brian,
Love the pictures - somehow the clear skin looks better in the water than I expected. It must be cool to see what's under you.

I've been thinking about building some SOF's for members of my family - Is the Nikumi style of build easier/cheaper than a ribbed design. I want to have my kids help and build maybe 3 at different sizes. I want them to be inexpensive, but not junk.

Thanks,

I thought it was a lot easier, but I'd guess --- and this is a guess --- that the multiple ribs will be more durable, but I don't know for sure. For skin, the vinyl is not durable, so I wouldn't use it on a kayak that I was actually going to use for real.
