Hello Oyvind
Joan Barrett at Bear Mountain asked if I might be able to help with your questions.
If you look at the image “short thwarts in a canoe’ I have arrows pointing at these pieces. They are curved like a suitcase handle and bolted into place under the inner gunwale.
These make very secure places to attach ropes or nylon web straps to secure the canoe to a car top.
The second image is my very poor artwork shoeing how to make a canoe bridle. It is important that the rope (about 15-18 m long) have a knot as shown and that the knot is placed DIRECTLY UNDER THE STERN SEAT AND RIGHT ON THE KEEL LINE.
The folded ends of the rope come up from the knot and are tied to the seat frame.
With this system you can pull at the canoe and it is always controllable.
If a motor boat is used to pull a canoe, this bridle also works well.
Hope this is of help.
