Since I haven't even completed the plans, this is probably way to premature a question to ask. But here goes anyway.
I would like to make a distinctive inlay. I have searched the net and found some information, but most involves marquetry. Has anyone done any inlaying, if so are there any books/articles etc that might give me an insight into doing it?
Many thanks, guess its the engineer in my, I like to have everything planned well in advance of the actual doing. You should see my Project Management plan for the canoe project!

I did a search at Chapters.ca and it gave me many hits of all different books about inlays. Not sure if you have chapters in the US but you could do the same with an online book store that is present in the US. Here is the link to my Chapters search if you want to look at the tittles of some of the books. --------> http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/sea ... ageSize=10
A lot of folks do an inlay of some sort on their canoes and kayaks. Some searching here should surely turn up a few things. Here's one thread on the subject, but there are others (many others): http://www.bearmountainboats.com/phpbb2 ... ight=inlay
I took a different approach, creating a sort of "throughlay" (there must be a term for this). Details on my blog: http://pawistik.blogspot.com/2007/08/ca ... -deck.html

Bryan,
Wow, nice work. That's exactly what I was thinking of. I'm looking at using Marquetry to create the pattern (my grand daughters name) then do the inlay.
Thanks for the timps and URL.

MrKim, that is really cool! What did you use to cut or groove the deck?
I did an overlay for my kayak, just a small maple leaf. Since it is small, the overlay is not an issue imo.
Here is a link to some really nice and fancy overlay:
