Varnish

Post by woodworkerjay »

Hi, I know there have been a few posts about varnish, but I have another question. The varnish that is at the big box hardware stores, the outdoor varnish, is it ok to use on a canoe? They do sell a helmsman brand that is for outdoor use too. I don't know where they sell the epifane or marine varnish around where I live. I live in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. If anyone has any tips that would be great. Thanks

God Bless
Jamie

Helmsman is Minwax's brand of spar varnish. I've used it on some pine screen doors a few years ago with good results.

Most products will say "above waterline use only", but that's ok for a canoe bottom because your not going to leave it in the water continously.
