Scarf joints for gunwales

Post by gregc »

Hi there,

I've finally gotten by the sanding and looking forward to getting back at some woodwork....I have to scarf the ash that will become my scuppered inwales/outwales and will use an 1:8 ratio but am not sure whether the planed scarf cut should be on the 7/8 or or 3/4 face. The 7/8 face would be up on the canoe. 3/4 to the hull and canoe inside. It seems logical that the straight joint edge would be facing to the outside and the angled joint to the top and bottom both for looks and bending strength but I've also heard that a scarf should always be cut across the wide face which would make a stronger joint where scuppers will be cut into it. This would put the straight lines of the joint to the top and bottom with the angle cut to hull and inside. Not sure what method you chaps would recommend to do these scarfs.

Thanks again,

Greg
