spar urethane vs. spar varnish

Post by pjfam »

Yup, I'm confused. It looks like spar urethane over the epoxy lasts longer but I'm wondering if anyone has done any repair/renew on these coatings and if the urethane is as friendly for recoat matching?

Spar varnish is made up of natural oils such as tung, linseed or soya. Spar urethane is a synthetic oil base product. As a rule varnish will have a color to it where most urethane is clear. Varnish will darken with age, example old furniture. Urethane as it gets older tends to crack as it harder than varnish. When it comes to repairs and re coats varnish tends to be easier to work with as it is more supple. The only draw back to repairs to varnished wood is if is very old matching the color is more difficult. Hope this helps
