stem band or not?

Post by andscott »

hi folks, have got outer stem glued in and am thinking of not fitting stembands purely for personal look reason, firstly is this wise and if ok do you just round the end off instead of leaving the 3/8 flat which would accommodate the stemband, any pics much appreciated, cheers andy.

Your call. I've built 3 canoes and put stem bands on one.

I think the answer depends on the canoe's intended use. If you think you will be near rocks (and who isn't), then I would recommend a brass stem band. My stem bands are scratched and banged from many rocks hidden below the surface.

I agree with Jeff
It depends on the use.I find mine is useful because the river I go on has locks some with concrete edges or nonslip material that is like sandpaper etc.
My keel band helps preserve the boat bottom from scratching when I haul her out to go around.
cheers
