Resolute Build

Post by gkulp »

Hey All,

New to the forum, new to boat building.

Just started lofting the molds for the Resolute from the tables in the 2000 edition of KayakCraft. I have read in a few places on the forum that there may be some updates to the tables. The links included in these messages all seem to be broken. Can anyone out there help me out with what corrections, if any, there may be to the tables included in KayakCraft for the Resolute?

Thanks a bunch,

Greg

Welcome to the forum

The only corrections I am aware of are for 5 canoes in Canoecraft, mostly related to the stems. https://www.bearmountainboats.ca/pages/faq They are about halfway down on the FAQ page.

I would think if there were corrections in Kayakcraft they would be listed here as well. The word kayak appears seven times on the FAQ page and none of them are associated with corrections.

Hopefully this is good news. I think I would plot the stations and stem molds and check the points with a flexible batten. If any points don't line up with a fair curve I would double-check them. There used to be a page on the old Bear Mountain site about plotting the molds. Here's a link to it. http://web.archive.org/web/201210300642 ... ofting.htm Ted says as long as a point is within 1/32" of a fair curve it's OK.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Stephen,

Thanks a lot for the quick response.

I am plotting them in AutoCad and splining the points. Thus far just a few that I tweaked 1/32 to keep the curves "fair", but nothing major. I am guessing if thee are any way out, I would see it. Again, thanks a lot, and I hope you have a great weekend.

I am confident more questions will come up during he build that I will post here, but that is part of the adventure.

I'm not sure if you knew there was a companion video series for Kayakcraft. It's not clear which model they're building but you might pick up some ideas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsQLdGt ... Ud&index=1

Some of the videos for Canoecraft may also be applicable although certainly not all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyGjdzT ... dex=2&t=0s

Afternoon, or evening, depending on where you are.

Lofting question.

I am lofting the molds for my Reolute based on the process described, and the section data included in the KayakCraft book. The mold sections look good, but they apear to be off vertically, or upside-down. The waterlines appear to be going in the wrong direction (14" WL near the bottom of the boat). I've included a screen shot of Sta 9 below. Let me know what you think, and if you can tell where I went wrong.

Thanks a lot,

Greg

I'm afraid I don't have a copy of Kayakcraft, but this is the way that things are laid out in Canoecraft. The baseline is above the vessel, and the waterlines increase in value as you go towards the keel. The waterline values do not actually indicate the draft of the boat at that point. I don't think you've made a mistake.

Also, AutoCad looks like a really cool way to loft a boat.

I've been rooting around in the forum and found a couple of references to offset errors for the Resolute dating back to 2006 and 2008. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2835 and viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2341

Glen Smith posted a link to some corrections which is now a dead link. I managed to retrieve the link with the Wayback Machine here http://web.archive.org/web/201102111417 ... kstems.htm
