To keel or not to keel

Post by canoebuildinggolfer »

As previosly stated my canoe is not a Bear Mountain canoe , however to the input it may as well be...the only plans I had to start with were some 'blueprint' half drawings that were labelled "laker" .....so after mulling over this site for a few (3) weeks I bit the bullet and went for it.....I modified the drawings to add rocker and paid the price...the canoe felt 'fast' on top of the water but we had trouble keeping it straight...I can now report that a 36" keel to both ends has made an enormous difference....mind you I didn't like the idea of 'spoiling' the smooth bow to keel form but it is done and the canoe is better for it...besides it is mentioned in Canoecraft to add a keel as required....I just love that book.
