Knot for painter

Post by Bassbug »

I've read that a figure 8 knot on a blight is a good knot for the painter. I have found images of the knot, but I can't see how it would be tied to a painter hole or a loop through the painter hole. It must be a "special" version of the knot. Can anyone help?

You'll want to use a figure 8 threaded like is used for attaching a rope to a harness in climbing. Or just use a simple boy scout knot-- the bowline. I use the bowline. The main advantage of the figure 8 knot over the bowline and the main reason it gets used in climbing over the bowline in recent times is that when weighed with sudden force the figure eight is easier to release and untie.

For painters, I'd just stick to a bowline, because it makes a prettier knot at the ends of your canoe. The figure 8 is actually a much larger knot. And you probably never get to the point that the figure 8 will be easier to untie than a bowline on your canoe.

edit: If you want to tie a figure 8, make a figure eight in the rope as you've seen pictured. Just a single figure 8, so that the rope continues on in the direction it flowed before tieing the knot. The run that through your painter hole. Bring the end back to the knot and then run the rope back through the figure 8 knot following the turns already there.
