varnish curing time

Post by patrick »

Hey folks, I put the last coat of varnish on my new paddle yesterday, a friend of mine sprayed it on with a sprayer he uses for cars and car parts. I would like to know what the recommended curing time is for epiphanes varnish? How long should i let it cure for before using it? I will post some pictures soon after it is done.

Put your nose to it and smell it. :crazy
If it smells like fresh varnish, it is still curing. When it no longer smells, which could take 3 or 4 days, it is cured enough for use but it is probably still hardening and will do so for about 1 week.

Hey Patrick,

Isn't it too cold in Chicago to be paddling this time of year? By spring the paddle should be cured. :laughing

Patrick,

When I was your age the only paddle that seen any use in the winter was used for disciplinary reasons and my parents didn't care if the varnish was dry.

:thinking Patrick, I'm not sure if your original post was for real. Did you "really" spray Epifanes on your instrument? If so, did your friend have any trouble thinning it so it would spray properly? The Epifanes I received when I mail ordered it, was like jello. Altho I was able to thin it sufficiently for brushing, I would never have thought you could spray that stuff. Maybe I had a bad batch, by the time I got near the bottom of the second quart, it was no longer useable it was so jelled.

The music was nice, Is that you or Dad playing. The tone was great.

And Hoz, I could hear that Cajun yell all the way out here. You make good music too!

Patrick, I am truly amazed at your building and playing talents. Randy, I guess you and the missus are pretty proud...as well you should be.

Wayne, the fiddle playing was Patrick. I just grabbed his cable while he was playing and recorded a tune (which he wrote BTW) on my computer. I don't have a musical bone in my body. I can't even tap my feet in time to a tune.

RE: your question on spraying Epifanes, he indeed did spray it on for the final 2 coats of the fiddle. Epifanes makes both a brush and a spray thinner for their varnish. The spray thinner dries/evaporates faster (allowing for a recoat sooner I guess).

Wayne, there must have been something wrong with your Epifanes. I have never seen it look like Jello.
