This is my first paddle.
I used leftover cedar from my canoe. The blade has 4 oz. glass and the whole paddle is has a couple of coats of epoxy.
Turned out very to be a very light weight paddle.

I gave away my old Camp bent shaft to a friend with arthritis. She could paddle with much less pain and it really helped her enjoy paddling a lot more. Time to build a new one.

Shaft is basswood core with ash plates. Blade is basswood with ash edge pieces. Grip is tuliptree. Tip is 3/16 " braided nylon saturated in epoxy with silica thickener added for hardness. Blade is glassed with 2 ounce cloth in epoxy. Shaped the shaft with router and rasp. Shaped the blade with surform tool and 50 grit paper on round foam block. Finished with Benjamin Moore Impervo 440 spar varnish. Came in at 30 ounces, heavier than I wanted, but not too bad. The next one will have less ash in the shaft and maybe some cedar in the blade. I'd like to get it down to 26 ounces. I use my paddles very hard and rough so getting that 20 ounce paddle is not my way too go. They need to be able to take the abuse.

I figure I better post one. This is my most recent paddle. It's a Northwoods paddle made from basswood.

This paddle is made from cedar and ash with walnut handle tips. It's not perfect but if I knew it would turn out this nice I would have used nicer wood instead of scraps from the shop.
