Hi Ian,

When cloth is purchased, it is usually from a roll in the store (at least for me) so knowing the actual mill and product can be a little tricky ... all I know is that the cloth from each supplier was supposed to be from the same mill ... but it handled completely different.

I did have a discussion with my regular supplier (where the issue started) and asked about sourcing and the material is supposed to be from the same mill in both cases. They were however, redesigning (and it seemed like considerable expense) the FG rolling machine ... I am starting to wonder if it all comes down to how the material gets handled.

So now I am not sure that I had a material problem or a material handling problem ... I think for the foreseeable future I will go and pickup any FG I need in stead of having it shipped.

I Love the steamer ! It seems like every builder has a slightly different set up.
Great time of year to steam too !
Those Turkey Fryers were a great inventions ! It seems like everyone has one at a garage sale, or sometimes on Junk day, though usually missing the hose.

A bit of progress on stripping my Freedom 17'. Not too bad for only working Saturdays & Sunday mornings.

Hi Randy

Those New clamps I posted info on, in Tips and Techniques .
Would work great between the stations. Hint Hint !

I'd love to hear others try them.

I was bragging to my wife about your new clamps just yesterday! I only have a few of those clamps and right now I'm using strapping tape between stations but I agree your clamps are very cool!

Jim, Question for you on your new clamp idea.... You know when you are putting the very first clamp on (I start in the middle - maybe this isn't normal), when you are at the turn of the bilge, you need to twist the strip quite a bit to get it to lay on the station mold. Would you clamp provide enough tension to keep it aligned with the previous strip? The ability to do that with 1 hand would be worth alot all by itself.

I find it cumbersome to hold the strip in place with one hand and apply the "L"-bracket, dowel and clamp all with the other hand.

I'm waiting to find out ! :dancing

I know ! Trying to get someone else to be the Guinea pig, with my idea ! Kinda like saying "I Think that Parachute will open !"

Guess I'd better try it ! I would say if it does, it will sure save a lot of wishing I had another hand ! This week, I'll be tied up. But plan to try and rig up a test !

After rereading your post. I run my bead of glue first, and then, take two 2" spring clamps, one towards each end of the canoe, and clamp on to the hull, with the strip loose inside the jaws of the clamps
This keeps the strip on the hull anyway. Stretching Inner tube over the jaws of the clamp, would protect the coves of the strip. I too strip from the center out. This works for me with staples.

By the way, the 17 looks great Randy !

I finished the starboard side yesterday and got a couple strips on the port side this morning....

Another 13 strips will close the hull.
