This is a photo of the NWC dish I made to replace the typical big foam blocks, on my solo yoke, that attaches to the seat. This dish only weighs in at a few ounces, much lighter than foam blocks or a hardwood dish.

The idea is to use that sort of lightweight dish, and just put a couple of hardwood rails side to side to carry the actual load, while the dish makes for a comfy carry. The actual rails could be solid pieces or laminated 1/4" pieces, shaped to give flair and maybe please your eye for shape. You may need to go a bit thinner if you want to bend very much (or use steam at 1/4"). Anyway, I am a few days from getting back to the shop and starting mine.

I really like that yoke. My homemade pads are way to heavy. That pad looks more comfortable too !

Nice

I had posted and explained my concept for the yoke I was making ... I just posted the completed version over on my build thread

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2006&p=30262#p30262

You may or may not find something you can use, but it does explain and demonstrate the concept I had.

Add some extra "thwarts" to anchor bow and stern decks which are 1/4" strips just like the hull material.

How do I position the cleats to hold the seats? How high above the floor should they be?

Straight forward, you need to know what drop (distance from gunnel to seat top) you want, measure the seat thickness, cleat top position is the drop plus seat thickness. Halfway down the page of this link is my installation of cleats on my last build :

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2006&start=90

If you kneel while paddling, then you need to keep the seat closer to the gunnel, think 2" ... you should be able to figure out the clearance it leaves. If you don't kneel ( I don't/couldn't), you can move the seat down some ( i use around 5"), which will give a more stability (lower center of gravity) but less room under the seat.

I would also check the area where you intend to install the cleats, there are very few flat areas on a canoe (and cleats tend to be flat), you may need to shape/fit the back to fit better for gluing. i would also consider the little channels to allow the seat to "drop in" and not move around much.

I remember not being able to wait for my seats ! It was in January, and I had just a little open water after a warm spell.

Looks great Jim !
