I guess I could have bought the new book book instead of the plans. Is there much difference in the books appart from the plans?

Buy the new edition, besides some of the older canoe designs being improved on (IIRC, they were re-faired with newer computer software by Steve Killing), there are also new techniques on strongback construction, paddlemaking, stapleless building, etc.
