I am thinking about building a canoe. I plan on using it mainly for fast cruising and recreational racing. I like the lines of the Solo Tripper 17. Does anyone know how lightweight one could build this boat using thin strips and lightweight glass? I'd like to get it under 40lbs. Is that possible.
Thanks,
Steve
Solo Tripper 17 - How lightweight can you go?
Hi!
Many information on lightweight building methods are allready on this forum, you just need to use the search button
Here is one of the topics that covers lightweight boatbuilding:

I personly find the idea of using balsa wood very interesting, and I might give it a try somday, but first I have to finish my current project.
If you want to go light, keep the trim to the minimum, I would use foam with carbon fiber for gunwales, and propably also really light carbon or carbon/aramide fabric.
I certainlyy think it is doable!
Good luck and keep us posted of your progress if you decide to start the project.
