first fish of the year

Post by slick »

despite this unseasonably cold spring here in new england, i caught a nice little 12" brown at a stream up in NH. water temp was in the 30s i'm sure, all the ponds and lakes are still frozen even down here in boston.

Congrats for the first fish! If this were April 1st I wouldn't believe you.
Was it catch & release or catch & eat? Caught on spinner bait, fly or other?
I won't be able to fish around here until about mid-may and the lakes will still have ice until June!

i almost always catch and release.
i think i was pushing the envelope a bit by trying so early, but cabin fever got to me. i figured if i got skunked it would convince me to wait a few more weeks. got him on a tiny spoon and he was so cold he barely put up a fight. think i'll give the fish a few more weeks to warm up anyway.
