Canadian boat certification

Post by Cyril Gosse »

Some time ago I asked Bear Mountain if they had any info regarding the certification requirements for home built boats such as the Rice Lake Skiff. They were unsure and suggested posting in the forum asking for info. Since then I have been in contact with Tramsport Canada and they sent several addresses where info could be gathered.
It seems that there are basically two requirements, ie a Hull Identification Number and a Small Vessel Compliance plate.
Both of these items would normally be supplied on the boat by the manufacturer but must be obtained from Marine Safety in the case of home built boats. The following links will provode the necessary info.

Hope this helps someone. I guess they can be pretty strict about this because the Small Vessel compliance states the maximum motor size and the load capacity. This applies to any boat less than six meters and capable of having a motor attached even if the motor is not installed.
