Viking Faering

Last spring, I designed a Viking Faering using the Gokstad Faering as a template. I belong to a viking-boat building mailing list, and there aren't that many free plans out there for Viking plans, so I suggested that you could design one in Hulls pretty easily. It turned out that soon after I wrote that I got a challenge to design a Viking Craft, so in the limited amount of time that I had before my summer paddling trips, I drew up the Faering (you can find plans here: http://www.nessmuking.com/boats.htm

I didn't actually think that anyone would go forward with the plan, but Andrew Linn from Salem, OR, ended up having enough free time to give it a go. You can see his website at http://www.andrewlinn.com/boatbuilding/ From a recent update, he is further along than his slide show shows, but it is an interesting project.

For a guy who grew just a mile away from the place where the Gokstadship were found, this is interesting.
Along with the ship they found 3 small boats, and the smallest was, i think 6,6 meters (21,5')

This is some information on the findings, and will also lead you to Gaia, a replica of the ship. I also have some pictures on my page (the bottom link , -the vikingship thumbn) from a short trip with the ship.
I have Hulls downloaded, and now I will have to give it a try with the your plans

The faering name comes from the four oars, it is rowd by two men with two oars each. Very fast.

Those are interesting sites.

I think that Andrew is planning on sailing the Faering and not rowing it, but I suspect that he will have oarlocks on the ship. I'm curious on how well this craft will sail and can't wait for him to finish it.
