Inwale Installation Helper

Post by ealger »

Tapered inwales are a little difficult to get clamped because the epoxy is slippery and the narrow tapered end is hard to get a hold of.

One way to help locate the tapered end is to attach a small locating block a few inches from the stem on the inside of the hull. Tack on the block with a dab of 5 minute epoxy or CA glue. Locate the block using a wood guide. See the pictures.

As you install the inwale, working up from amid ship, and you near the end of the inwale, bend the inwale inward and lay it on the locating block. Clamp lightly with a quick-grip clamp above the block. The clamp is needed to keep from ripping the block off as you proceed to align the inwale up the shear line as the block is only tacked on.

After the epoxy is cured, the locating block can be knocked off with a chisel or it can be left on as it is hidded by the deck. If you're afraid that your tack might fail, you could glue it on permanently.

Ealger, gluing that block in would have made bending and clamping the inwales in my Huron much easier... good tip!
