Easy Steam Method

Post by ibefishin »

I just built my first cedar canoe and didn't have a steam box for stems. Instead, I placed the strips to be steamed on a wet towel lying on a flat surface. Then I folded the towel over the strips and wet the top of the towel. Next I borrowed my wife's steam iron and ironed the top of the wet towel. This forces the steam from the iron and from the wet towel into the strips. After a short time, I flipped the strips over and repeated the process. Total time of maybe 10-15 minutes and I had nice steamed Ash strips that bent easily over the stem forms.

As you need is a towel, some water and a steam iron. Easy!
