removing oil spots?

Post by Patricks Dad »

I riveted my aluminum gunwales on my kevlar/carbon/glass canoe last weekend. I used a brand new pneumatic rivet tool to put them in (I'll never squeeze a pop-rivet tool again!). After I did the first 8 rivets, I noticed that the tool was venting it's blast of air out the front/bottom of the tool (right onto my hull). I now have a nice series of 8 oil blotches 8" apart on my hull. I tried to wash them off with a little soap and water but it didn't work.

Do you guys have advice on removing oil from epoxy surfaces? I've never had to worry about cleaning the surface of my canoes after glassing but I should get rid of these marks before I apply a final finish.

Thoughts?

I'd try paint thinner first, if not Lacquer thinner, and Acetone last, if still needed.
