New kayak build under way

Post by Glen Smith »

I have finally gotten around to cutting out the forms to build my next kayak. It is based on the Resolute design with a few modifications. This one is being built to specs for a customer.

I think the work table could use a good coat of paint. :embarassed

How so?

It will have the length of the Resolute but the width of the Endeavour. The deck also has a bit more volume, the bow section is a bit wider. The front hatch will contain a concealed cockpit coaming and seat adapted to a small child.

Glen,

Looks great. What happened to the miniature kayak you were working on? Any pictures we can see of it?

The Mini-Resolute project ( 1/3 scale ) got pushed aside by other priorities and no further work has been done on it. I might continue on it next Summer if I return to the Kite & Kayak Festival in Pictou, Nova Scotia. If not, it will get done one of these days.

Here is a progress pic of my latest project. The forms have all been installed and aligned, next step is to shape the inner stems.

Looking nice. I'm jealous, it's just too cold here now to build.

Thanks Bryan, if I didn't have a heated workspace I never would have gotten hooked on boat-building. :rolling eyes

Progress Report

Post by Glen Smith »

Hull stripping has begun. I have installed a K.I.S.S. accent stripe at the customer's request. I made some little "Helping Hands" to support the strips as I apply the glue in the cove since I strip with the bead up. Once the glue is applied, I just flip the strip into position on the hull.

I added a few more strips today, inner stems are almost covered.

How much above the waterline is the accent stripe?

The accent stripe is just barely above the waterline in the center portion and a few inches above it at the bow. It follows the sheerline.
