Rawhide source

Post by MrDave »

Hi there!

My Redbird project is nearing completion. Its been tons of fun and I've benefited greatly by reading other's questions and answers on this site. Its not nearly as nice as any that are posted here, but it will float and more than happy with it so far.

I now need to finish the seats and was thinking of using rawhide lace but have been unable to find a good source. Searching on this site yielded a couple of links, both of which seem to be gone. Can anyone recommend a source for rawhide lace, preferably in Ontario?

Many thanks,
Dave

Fabersnowshoes still sells rawhide. They are located in Quebec.

Thanks Glen!

Do you think 60 meters of the 3/16 inch is enough for two seats? They are about 10 by 12 inches and I expect to wrap the rawhide around the frame without drilling holes.

One of our old members, Jean-Pierre Auger, tried 3/16" on his seats but he said the rawhide was not a constant thickness and he feared it would break so he did them over again using 3/8" and he was very pleased with the result.

Rawhide is normally laced around the seat frame members so holes are not required.

I used 3/16" for my seats. I thought it was a bit on the thin side and would use wider next time. I bought about 200 ft and had more than enough. Probably used closer to 150 ft. 60m will be plenty.

I slightly modified the design shown here: http://www.knotworkn.com/Lacing.html

Thanks very much for the help. I think I'll order the 1/4 inch lace then. If I accidentally order more than I need, I'll just have to build a 2nd canoe to use it up. :)
