I like the old oil, varnish, thinner combined in thirds. Wipe on let sit till just tacking up and wipe off. Wet sand between coats with 400 grit. Spar varnish, watco style oil or linseed and turps or mineral spirit. Hand rubbing with a cotton rag brings up the luster. As many coats as you like. This avoids the high shine encased in plastic look of some varnishes and does not chip or peel. Looks good and maintenance is as easy as slapping on more finish and repeat. You can add more varnish proportionately in later coats to build the finish.
