Rudder Mounting Plate

Post by arudson »

Based on something I saw in a book I had this custom rudder mounting plate made up by a local sheet metal fabrication shop. The plate is 1/8” and both plate and tube are stainless. The pin on my Feathercraft kit rudder fits nicely in the hole and can spin freely but doesn’t have a sloppy feel. The screw hole nearest the pin hole is threaded and will assist in keeping the rudder support bolt secure. I designed the plate so the pin slot will be located just beyond the stern stem and asked that the fabricator take care to minimize the weld buildup at the point where the tube would be nearest the stem to allow me to install it as close as possible. The guy did a nice job smoothing the edges and I felt it well priced at around $50 all said and done.
