Has anyone "stripped" a canoe with Sycamore?

Post by Sherm »

I'm planning starting another Canoe, I've had a large Sycamore tree sawned and
is nearing dry. I did a search here and didn't find any thing, except it does absorb its fair
share of epoxy. I've got alot of Walnut that was giving to me from "Tornado-ruins" that should
look good as trim ( gunnels) and accents with a good contrast with the light Sycamore.

What is the weight of Sycamore compared to WRC? You can always make thinner strips to reduce weight if necessary.

what I found on the Internet so far is that it's 33lbs per cu.ft.
for comparison: Western Red Cedar 21 lbs.
Eastern Red Cedar 30 lbs.
Red Oak 41 lbs.
I've built one from Eastern Red Cedar, a 15ft Hiawatha that ended up at 68 lbs. (not bad I guess)
(strips cut at 1/4 inch) I will definitely try cutting the Sycamore strips at 3/16ths.
