Kayak sheer clamp

I may have missed it, but I can't find anywhere in Kayakcraft where a material is suggested for the sheer clamp. Can it be a light weight material like cedar or does it need to be something similar to gunnel material like ash?

I've cut my 4x8 cedar into 1" boards 18' long so I have plenty of material if cedar works.
