Left overs ?

Post by Jim Dodd »

I've long sinced closed up shop for the Winter, and now I've been wondering what everyone does with their left over strips, epoxy, and cloth ?

I have a snow scoop that was made from fiberglass with a 3/4" conduit handle. My Step Father used to buy them and sell. They work great ! You never lift the snow. I should take a picture of one ! The're pretty much square with three sides about 6" high.
Anyway, When temps allow I think I'll make a new one to replace the old worn out one.

Ok now some more Ideas from you other builders !

I build paddles with my left overs. Here's a pic of a few. All have hollow shafts made with leftover strip. All weigh in the 1 pound range.

Glenn.
If you could only find someone small enough to paddle that six footer !
Randy
16oz? Wow careful where you lay them down ! A good wind, or another paddle would make them vanish !
Thanks guys !

Lots of great uses of materials, guys. Randy, nothing shows care of detail more than fancy workshop stuff, the plug plates are great.

Now I've got a new mission !
Build a wannagan ! Like how it fits under the inwhales, nice and snug ! With a lid, you could lay out a map, serve lunch, fillet a fish ! A small dog would have a perch ! And if sealed, flotation !
Thanks a bunch Alick !

Yep that's the idea Jim
I've also made a wood strip paddle following Gil Gilpatrick's build method with Graham Warren's beavertail blade pattern and John Michne's butterfly decoration idea.

Nice looking paddles.
I have a question on the two blades in the center of your six-paddle picture. How did you get your cedar to make that bend ?

The strips were bent and clamped around a center core one strip at a time. The convex shape in the middle of the paddle on the right was cut from some solid cedar I had laying around. The scraps from that core were joined to form the convex core shape for the paddle on the left. I chose the arc for those cores to match the maximum curvature I could easily accommodate with bending the strips by hand (no steaming was needed).

I've been using the paddle on the right (of those 2 center paddle) as my personal paddle for a couple years now. It's been through 5 wilderness trips so far. It has a monocular embedded in the hand-grip that I really like.

"A monocular embedded in the hand-grip" ... now that's something I've never seen. That could be very useful in locating a portage trail or campsite from afar. Can you post a close-up photo and a description of how you built that?
