Welcome to the new Bear Mountain Builders Forum - an interactive internet service we provide to encourage communication between canoe and kayak builders
I recently finished my second boat, a Northwest Passage Solo. I built it out of basswood with the trim made from some French walnut that I had laying around. It is a 15' asymmetric design with a moderate amount of rocker. I built it for paddling flat, moving water and it is everything I could want for that. I wrote a couple of articles on the build that you can read here if you want. http://customfurniture.us/index.php/fur ... trip-canoe

I was pretty careful with my epoxy work and made my gunnels smaller than normal. I also mounted the seat to blocks glued to the hull, which allowed me to loose any thwarts.
I was wondering about the gap in the hull you left at first, and was quite intrigued by the idea of a sabot. I had never heard of them, but makes great sense if you are going to be where you might be bumping into stuff.
Hi Scott
Checking into your link, I see you're no stranger to wood work ! I'm really impressed !
Your Passage, and other work looks great !
Al Gustaveson, from Minnesota, and original owner of NorthWest Canoe, was the first that I encountered that had made canoes with a "Sabot". I think the idea was to be able to fine tune the bow entry lines.
