New Year Build
Re: New Year Build
Hi Jim,
Once again, that looks awesome! I really like your football design.
Quick question...I've been under the assumption that I'd have to be able to open my garage door to do my fiber glassing for ventilation, which means it'll be late April or May (provided I can even get finished stripping by then =P). Outsides temps wont get into the mid teens until then where I live.
Do you find it is generally comfortable to glass with the garage all closed up? Does it stink up the house while it cures? It'd be great to have the option to glass sooner than later!

Re: New Year Build
I much prefer to glass with the doors wide open and 80 degrees F. Not only for the faster cure rate of the resin, but the fresh air. I always wear a good mask with a carbon filter ! If I don't, I seem to get head aches, and the tip of my tongue feels funny. Even with the doors open.
Right now my shop is closed up and about 65 degrees F. The cure rate is too slow. The odor isn't really bad, it's just the effects on me that I worry about.
Better safe than sorry!

Re: New Year Build
Ok, thanks for the info. I'll wait for the warmer weather so that I can open up the garage doors... =)
Re: New Year Build
I know it's been a while, but this retired life is keeping me too busy !
Since my last post on this build, I pulled a Kevlar copy off this hull.
I now have the inside of my New Year build sanded.
Beings it had a lot of tumblehome, I ended up hand sanding most of the interior.
I make it a point to leave the center form in as much as possible, to keep the hull in it's original shape. It works !
Here's a few pics.
The stiff discs work great to sand clear into the stem areas. The smaller one can be wrapped around the yellow Pool Noodle to sand. both of the discs are 50 grit.

Re: New Year Build
The interior cloth laid in
Cloth wetted out
Everything went pretty good, just a little trouble with outgassing. I usually handle this by timing the wetting of the cloth when out side temps are falling. If this doesn't work, I revert to a blow drier (Borrowed from my Wife)
Neither of these worked this time, Added an extra coat of resin, 9 oz. and blower drier again.
Hope I have it.

Re: New Year Build
Put together flotation chambers.
I will be adding screw type bilge plugs, so plan to glass at least part of the back side.

DONE !!!
I'm washing my hands and smelling the roses.
Pearl is drying, as the Watco on the trim is still tacky.
Here's a few pics.
Thanks for following along on my 21st build.

Re: New Year Build
Beautiful job Jim, I noticed the detail on the thwart, did you laminate in a dark wood ?
Also, thanks for the pics, the inside glass shot was good to see, I am doing that today ... seeing what other folks do, helps ease the tension of glassing.

Thanks Brian
Yes, the thwart is laminated, ash and walnut. I found by routing a bevel, it created arrows pointing towards each other. This was accidental, but cool to me.
Now to get it in the water !

That looks incredible, Jim! Well done!
Re: New Year Build
Thanks Grumple !
I just want to say, nearly every canoe I see being built these days, look SOO much better than my first canoe, it isn't funny !
It's taken me a long time to build 21 canoes, and #22, a Kevlar is not far behind. I learn something new with each canoe !
Thanks again, and good building !
