Rob Roy

Post by Andre »

Just started building a Rob Roy Solo. After having built and finished a 17' Endeavour in March of this year a 13' canoe seems easy and pleasant to build.

Anyone ever built a Rob Roy? I am curious about what you would have selected as a seat.

I haven't built a Rob Roy but I think I have seen them with a seat that is fixed directly to the bottom of the hull with blocks.

I built two of them last year. I mounted my seats to the bottom with epoxy and a support in the middle.

Here is a picture of the finished canoe showing the seat location and the back support.

I used a simple seat based on Jim Dodds pictures that uses snowshoe nylon flat tubing.

Have fun.

I have built more than a dozen wee lassies, always use a support on the bottom, and pre-woven cane from Lee Valley pressed into a groove in the frame with a spline. It's quick, looks good, and is easy to replace (in 10 years or so) when you need to. use a backrest suspended from the thwart and straps back from the gunwales, and a dowel for a footrest.
