NewSpring Clamps for Bead and Cove Stripping

Post by Jim Dodd »

Here are some Spring clamps I made up to hold strips together, on my Bead and Coved strips, while the glue dries!
The white plastic tubing should protect the Coves !
These clamps cost me about $1.50 a piece to make.
I purchased the Spring clamps at Menard's for $1 a piece. The Inner tube, the smallest I could find at Walmart, for $3.88 a tube
. The inner tube yields 11 pieces, when cut at 7".
The plastic 1/4" OD tubing was $.09. I cut this into 1" pieces. The Zip ties, I had.
Here's some pics.

Ha ! Yes ! I'm waiting on cure time ! I hate sanding gummy Epoxy. I also have a couple of days worth of Shop clean up to do !

Old Men have to do something this Time of year !

I hope you will try these clamps !
I guess I could go to the shop and mock up a hull to try them !
Today The streets are pure ice ! Maybe tomorrow !

I just got back from putting the clamps to a test ! They work great ! Just Squeeze and release ! No dowels to mess with !They have plenty of pressure to stay, and keep the glue joint tight !

I put 5 more together, and realized, if I cut the inner tube strips at 6 1/2", I can get an even dozen from one inner tube. They will be fine at that length.

A pic.

Hi Jim,

The TQ is designed for -5C/22F ... it's for the ice out and late fall trips

Thought for the spring clamps, it might be easier to just put the tubing on the clamps, then just use full lengths of 1/4" dowel (plastic/wood etc) and spread the clamp pressure a bit more evenly. Separate the cove protection from the clamps and it may be just as easy and give better clamping.

Hi Brian,
The pic may be misleading, . The zip tie is easily adjusted. It only takes one hand to use this clamp. I don't think It could any easier, than to squeeze, and set the clamp with one hand.
Plus you won't drop any dowel on the floor, with this clamp.

That bag looks Sweet ! My Son bought one a couple of years ago ! He says you want a realyl good pad below you ! He likes his !

After putting 5 of these together the other day, I came up with a solution to save wear and tear on my fingers.
Take two 4" 20D nails, and bend them as shown. Grind down the points if you like.
Insert the nails in the tube piece, and spread over clamp end.

Hi Randy
I set up a few forms Thursday, and stapled a few scrap strips, in the Bilge area of the forms. The clamps worked great, holding the strips in alignment, as they follow the curve of the bilge.

I'll soon be starting another build, (Wee Lassie II) I'll really get a chance to put them to the test.

I haven't even finished this canoe Jim, I caught myself looking at spring clamps in Home depot today, was a good deal 2/1/2", 99 cents each .... I caught myself almost buying 2 dozen to make clamps for the next canoe that I haven't even planned yet and I still have this one to finish.

I managed to regain control, but I am thinking on this.

Hey Jim! My goodness, that's a very clever idea! I'm planning on finishing up my stem shaping this Friday and begin planking on Saturday. Planning on building a set of these clamps for applying clamping pressure in between forms. I will probably use the typical wedge method for clamping at the forms. Since I chose to strip using bead-up I can even skip the tubing portion of the design! Just a clamp and a bike tube, nice :)

Question: what size spring clamp do you have there, Jim? I see Menard's sells 1", 2", and 3" spring clamps. Just curious.

Thanks for the tip! Saves me the cost of tape or bungee cords ;)

2".
Home Depot has them also !
Walmart has the tubes, and if you cut them at 6 1/2" you will get 12 from one tube. For Bead up these will work great !
Enjoy the build !
