Follow along as I build my first canoe

Post by Ryan.davis137 »

Hello everybody I thought I'd share the progress I've made on my 16' prospector. This is my first build and I'm not much of a wood worker so please be easy with your criticism. I do however work as a Sawyer at a live edge hardwood slab mill so I really enjoy cutting wood and because of my job I have access to some really nice wood. I bought a 18' x 30" old growth fir log that was dug up at a farm here in the Snoqualmie valley.

It's not a perfect piece of wood but I was able to cut off some full length CVG boards on the flat grain at about 4/4 or so. That was about a year ago, it air dried and when I was happy with it's Moisture Content I ripped the wide boards down, planed and then cut strips.

I then milled the bead and cove which I didn't document for some reason but you can imagine how that went. I did have some chip out but I blame myself for that, I think I could've gone about the milling a bit different and actually later on I did and I had better results. But now I have usable strips and am ready to start building.

I knew at some point I needed to break off and complete one side past the centerline.

I made it past the centerline and got the centerline marked out

And now at this current time I have the centerline cut as nice as I can

That's all I have for now thanks for looking

Curious to why you stopped stripping on the one side ?

I keep stripping both sides, up to the point of covering the Stem forms.
Then strip one side to the centerline.

Jim I wasn't too sure when to actually break off and complete one side to the centerline so I did it earlier than needed; i see now I could've done it different. Same outcome tho right? I'm kinda winging this canoe project of mine

Jim

I see now that I could've split off later than I did. I understood what I wanted to accomplish but I didn't understand exactly how to go about preforming the work to get the desired result. Now that I've done it I won't be so timid next build.
