Back on the Build

Post by compass »

After taking a couple of months off I am back on my first build Ranger. I was a bit intimidated about cutting a plumb centerline and trimming planks to fill in the "football" but it is actually going pretty well since I started using sanding sticks and my table saw to do the final shaping since my hand planing just wasn't meeting my expectations.

I attached a sanding wheel to my table saw and utilized a clamped piece of plywood as a temporary fence. By tilting the sanding wheel I was able to shape both angles needed on the end of each plank after testing on scrap pieces of planking.

The process is slow but I think it would be even slower if I shaped everything by hand (doing 2 planks/day). The important thing is that I'm pretty happy with the results as I'm getting a minimal about of gapping both inside and outside of the hull.
