how much to fill

Post by pjfam builder »

I have minor tearouts from planing maybe 1/16 deep and a1/4 or so across. I also have cracks between planks, mostly from the cove flange cracking off, that go from barely there to a 1/16 across. They don't go through, just a valley from missing wood. This is after rough sanding.
My question is how much do I fill and how much, if any disappears when glassing?

Glassing won't solve any of the fill issues, it is like painting, it will highlight any surface variations ... so you need to fair the hull if you want it to look decent.

I would do the rough sanding, board the hull so that it is nice and flat, then fill the cracks and divets with thickened epoxy, that you colour with a bit of woodflour.

Here is a link to my last build covering how I like to fill stuff, you may find something useful there.
