Hi All,
Just getting into the fun stuff now on my 16' Bob's Special build.
I steamed the stems Sunday and used white ash for the inside and outside stems.
Last night I epoxy laminated the first set of Stems, and finally took off the clamps a few minutes ago.
I was surprised to see they still spring back a bit, maybe 1/2" to 3/4" up off the sheer line portion of the form, if I hold the end down on the keel line end of the station form. Definitely way way less then non glued, but...
Is this normal?
Will it cause problems?
I'm amazed at how stiff it is, it will bend back with some pressure, but don't know if this will cause a problem when stripping.
Or will clamping, as you do, and then the combined holding power of all the strips keep it in check?
Thanks and appreciate any insight.
Stem Springback off the form after Lamination
Re: Stem Springback off the form after Lamination
Not unusual. Clamp it in place and remove clamps as you need room for strips. The strips will hold it to shape.
Re: Stem Springback off the form after Lamination
Up to 30% springback isn't unusual for steam bent wood. Once it gets glued up that is no longer be an issue, it will take the shape of the mold and hold.
